A recent survey of remodeling professionals reveals that annual “color of the year” promotions from paint companies carry limited direct influence over their project decisions. According to the findings, sixty-one percent of respondents admit to monitoring these trends at least periodically, whereas sixteen percent dismiss them completely. The data indicates that while awareness exists, these trends seldom determine final selections.
Remodelers display a divided perspective on trend colors. Thirty-two percent would entertain using a fashionable shade for a project, while an equal proportion reject them entirely. Twenty-three percent take a wait-and-see approach, and a smaller percentage (13%) remain unaffected by the announcements. The majority, seventy-one percent, have declined a trend-based color at least once, demonstrating a preference for enduring client satisfaction over temporary appeal.
Among building materials, paint emerges as the sole category where color trends hold meaningful sway. Sixty-eight percent of remodelers identify paint as the primary area where trends matter, due to its low cost and ease of modification. In contrast, materials like exterior siding or roofing present higher risks, as mistakes in those areas can result in expensive corrections or client dissatisfaction.
Although clients ultimately hold decision-making authority, remodelers play an essential role in shaping choices. Nearly half of those surveyed stated that homeowners drive the conversation, while thirty-seven percent described decisions as collaborative. No remodeler reported imposing color selections unilaterally, highlighting the necessity of aligning client preferences with professional guidance.
The survey suggests that trend announcements function primarily as discussion catalysts rather than prescriptive directives. They may inspire ideas, but remodelers act as gatekeepers, helping clients assess whether a color will endure over time. For high-visibility materials, the focus shifts from trend adherence to longevity and personal preference.
As a practical consequence, remodelers frequently advise against trend-driven colors in spaces where modifications are costly or impractical. The annual color releases thus serve less as directives for specific hues and more as prompts for thoughtful deliberation between professionals and clients.
