A 1960s Mornington Peninsula beach house is now on the market after a series of owners transformed it from a near‑ruin to a light‑filled residence.
Renovated 1960s Property Finds New Owner
The dwelling, located at 10 Cootamundra Avenue, Capel Sound, VIC, 3940, was originally slated for demolition. In 2016, an interior designer and a builder bought the structure and carried out a careful remodel that preserved its character while making it livable.
Their approach combined thoughtful layout changes with preservation of original elements, ensuring the character of the 1960s architecture remained evident seven years later.
Seven years later, the same owners listed the property. The new buyer, a woman named Vicki, first saw the house in a 2022 feature on The Design Files and was drawn to its spacious layout, abundant natural light, and a garden that was already taking shape.
It turned out to be the third property she acquired after initially discovering it through the same design publication, reinforcing her trust in the outlet’s curated selections.
Light, Garden and Family Appeal
Vicki said the architecture and “many unusual features” offered her a chance to personalize the space. Having lived in Queensland for over two decades, she appreciated the sun that moves around the residence all day, allowing “coffee out the front in the morning and drinks on the back deck in the evening.”

Because the renovation work was already completed, Vicki found ample opportunity to devote her energy to expanding the young garden and to explore the surrounding Peninsula, rather than tackling structural projects.
The abundance of daylight throughout the day was cited as a major attraction, making indoor spaces feel open and enhancing the connection to the outdoors.
The property’s five bedrooms have accommodated visits from Vicki’s three children, their partners, and four grandchildren, making it a practical venue for gatherings. Its location—just one block from the bay, near farms, bakeries, a pool and walking trails, adds to the appeal.
Proximity to the bay not only offers beach walks but also quick access to local farms and bakeries, supporting a relaxed coastal lifestyle.
Looking ahead, the house may attract buyers who value a turn‑key beachside setting without the need for major repairs. Its recent renovation and established garden could also make it a strong contender in a market where ready‑to‑move‑in options are scarce.

Vicki decided to sell, noting she will miss the ease of living the property provides. “It has a great flow with a focus on the garden and light,” she said. “It is a happy house to live in, and I couldn’t ask for more.”
