A London duplex apartment has been transformed into an elegant urban sanctuary, blending timeless comfort with a contemporary edge. The project, led by Jack Simpson of Nomad, showcases a thoughtful approach to interior design, merging the clients’ country-living aesthetic with the urban vibe of Chelsea.
The four-bedroom apartment, spanning the ground and lower ground floors, boasts generous proportions and a connection to the outdoors. Its location in a historic area adds a layer of intrigue, with ties to a former monarch and the Cheyne family.
A blank canvas for urban living
The clients, a design-conscious couple, sought a city retreat that mirrored the warmth of their country home. Simpson’s challenge was to translate their style into an urban setting, creating a space that felt both familiar and fresh.
The process began with a complete interior strip-out, allowing for a holistic redesign. Spatial planning was key, ensuring the smaller footprint felt comfortable and functional. The flow between spaces and the practicality of each room were carefully considered, resulting in a layout that feels natural and effortless.
The kitchen exemplifies this balance, serving as the heart of the home. A bespoke island and banquette seating create a sociable and relaxed atmosphere, while organic materials like wood, marble, and brass add texture and depth.
This approach extends to other utilitarian spaces, where continuity and thoughtful details create a seamless experience.
A refined palette and thoughtful curation
A subtle color palette allows the materials and textures to take center stage, creating a connection between the interior and the greenery outside. The principal suite, with its west-facing views, embodies this, keeping the design restrained to highlight the natural light and outdoor outlook.
The clients’ existing furnishings were re-evaluated for the new space, with a focus on proportions and character. Bespoke pieces are paired with antiques and characterful objects, creating a harmonious blend that adds personality to the home.
As Simpson notes, the sense of harmony is what makes this project successful. By reinterpreting the clients’ country-living style for an urban context, the apartment feels both familiar and unique, a true sanctuary in the heart of London.
Seamless Integration of Practicality and Beauty
The bathroom continues this theme, with marble from the kitchen carried through to the vanity, creating a sense of continuity. The inset-style cabinetry, featured in both the kitchen and utility area, further unifies the design, ensuring no space feels like an afterthought.
A Timeless Blend of Old and New
This subtle approach allows the natural light and outdoor outlook to take center stage, enhancing the sense of harmony throughout the space.
