The KUIU Kodiak 2000 Cooler Backpack was designed for hunters, but one writer found it works well for tradesmen too, offering a unique blend of cooler and backpack storage that caters to both outdoor enthusiasts and professionals.
A 20-pound ice load lasted 3.5 days in 70°F to 90°F temperatures, outperforming a discontinued Yeti model by half a day, showcasing its exceptional ice retention capabilities.
The backpack’s storage capacity allows for essential items like body wipes, a first aid kit, and a multi-tool, with room for extra clothing. However, liquids like sunscreen and bug spray require separate containment to prevent leaks, which can be managed with a Ziploc bag or an external pouch attached to the numerous lash points. The lack of a padded sleeve for laptops or tablets limits its use for trade work, but its IPX7 waterproof rating and TIZIP MasterSeal zippers ensure gear stays dry, even in harsh conditions.
The Kodiak 2000’s ice retention is a standout feature. With closed-cell foam insulation about an inch thick, it kept ice for 3.5 days in Florida’s summer heat, surpassing a discontinued Yeti model. This makes it ideal for long days outdoors, whether hunting, hiking, or working in construction. The internal capacity, measuring about 5 x 11 inches at the opening and 18 inches deep, can hold up to 20 pounds of ice or 28 twelve-ounce cans, providing ample space for a day’s worth of supplies.

The backpack features padded shoulder straps, a chest strap, and a removable hip belt. There’s generous padding against the back, along with channeling for airflow, which eases pressure on contact points when fully loaded. The chest strap offers a broad range of adjustment in both height and width, and the hip belt, while removable, may be useful for longer hikes in agricultural or forestry sectors.
The Kodiak 2000 includes practical features like a stretch bottle pocket for water, a welded pouch for a wallet, phone, and keys, and numerous lash points for securing the cooler in truck beds, ATVs, or boats. Its smaller footprint compared to hardshell coolers helps keep vehicle spaces less cluttered.
While the Kodiak 2000 may not suit everyone, especially those needing to support multiple people or carry laptops, it’s a well-designed solution for individuals looking to combine their cooler and storage needs in one backpack. For hunting, fishing, and some hiking applications, it’s a purpose-built solution that’s well designed and well built. It’s particularly useful for construction trades where carrying a day’s worth of supplies in a vehicle is necessary. However, for larger crews or those needing to transport electronics, alternative solutions may be more appropriate.
